The garden at Mas Generós, spanning over one hectare, is not merely an outdoor space or an addition to the hotel—it defines it. That is why we like to call it a “garden-centric” project, where the garden is a living, functioning organism that allows us to interconnect nature, hospitality, and cuisine.
Located in a privileged corner of the Baix Empordà, surrounded by the Gavarres mountains, the garden integrates into the Empordà which, as Josep Pla described, is “a varying and diverse song” because it is a landscape in constant transformation, where nature, culture, and everyday life intertwine. Created on impoverished and abandoned land, the current garden is the result of a long process of regeneration. Where there was once rubble and weeds, there is now a living, diverse, and balanced ecosystem, capable of harboring plants, insects, birds, and life in all its forms.
Just a few minutes away by car are the beautiful coves and beaches of the Costa Brava, its coastal paths (Camins de Ronda), and sea activities such as kayaking and boat rentals to enjoy this coastline from the water or visit the magnificent, life-filled Medes Islands.
Conceived as a naturalistic garden, its design seeks minimal intervention so that nature can express itself, respecting natural rhythms. Plants grow freely, adapted to the location and climate, creating a landscape that shifts with the seasons and invites observation, listening, and reconnection. This natural state has fostered biodiversity, turning the space into a refuge for birds, insects, and pollinators. A biodiversity that we also actively promote through respectful actions, such as providing nesting materials and introducing plants that attract butterflies.
The garden is also edible. Vegetables, fruit trees, aromatic plants, and flowers are part of a living system that nourishes the kitchen, originating from the land and returning to it as a closed loop of energy where nothing goes to waste. This intimate relationship between garden and gastronomy translates into the restaurant’s floral and botanical offerings, transforming the dining experience as guests taste the landscape guided by chef Iolanda Bustos and the kitchen team.
The most celebrated feature of the garden is its floral universe, especially the collection of roses, which prioritizes old varieties to remain consistent with the chemical-free cultivation practiced throughout the garden. These roses are selected for their beauty, fragrance, origin, and literary connections. Strolling through Mas Generós means embarking on a narrative: paths, secret spots, meadows designed by renowned landscape architects like John Greenlee, a magnesium salt purified swimming pool, the aromatic garden with the delicate sound of fountains, the pond with fish and water lilies, the wisteria-covered pergola, the greenhouse, the sub rosa gazebo, and the floral experimentation laboratory. Altogether, it is a garden that reconnects you with a slower, more conscious, and sensory way of living, deeply rooted in the Empordà.
Walk through our garden among old roses, organic orchards, and splendid biodiversity.
